What discreet dating means
Discreet dating is dating where you decide who knows about it. That might mean keeping it from colleagues, family or a partner, or simply not wanting your face on a mainstream app that anyone in your town can scroll through. It describes how you date, not who you are or what kind of relationship you want.
People choose discretion for many reasons: a relationship that has changed, a public-facing job, a recent separation, or a wish to explore something new without an audience. None of these is unusual, and none needs justifying to a website.
Privacy is not the same as anonymity
Privacy means limiting who can see information about you. Anonymity means nobody can link anything back to you at all. Online dating can offer the first, within limits. It cannot honestly promise the second.
Even on a well-designed site, the people you talk to can take screenshots, remember details and recognise you if you meet. Your phone, email, bank and network provider all hold records of their own. A site that claims to be "100% anonymous" or "untraceable" is telling you something that is not true. Our discretion guide covers the parts of privacy that sit with you rather than with the platform.
Expectations, boundaries and consent
Discretion works best alongside honesty with the person you are meeting. Before things go far, it helps to agree:
- what each of you is looking for, from occasional meetings to something more regular
- how and when you can contact each other, and what to do if a message is not answered
- what is off limits, including photos, names and places
- what happens if either of you wants to stop
Consent applies throughout. Either person can change their mind at any point, and that should be respected without argument. Our guides on setting boundaries and expectations and talking about consent, limits and desires go into this in more depth.
Common privacy considerations
When you use any dating platform, think about:
- Your profile. Who can see it, and whether it shows anything that identifies you, such as your workplace, a distinctive photo or your exact location.
- Your photos. Whether you can keep them private and choose who sees them.
- Your contact details. Using a separate email address and, later, a separate messaging account. See using separate email and phone numbers.
- Your devices. Notifications, saved passwords and shared tablets. See notifications and shared devices.
- Your payments. What appears on a statement. See payments, receipts and location tracking.
Questions to ask before you join a platform
- Who runs the site, and how can you contact them?
- Does the privacy policy explain, in plain English, what is collected and how long it is kept?
- Can you keep photos private and decide who sees them?
- Are prices shown before you sign up, and can you cancel easily?
- How do you report someone, and what happens next?
- Can you delete your account yourself?
Our checklist for choosing a discreet dating site works through each of these.
